Why Having An Energy Efficient Air Conditioner Is Important

It may seem obvious as to why homeowners would want an energy efficient air conditioner, but most homeowners are not aware that the appliance that uses the most energy in there home is their AC unit. Maybe they have moved into a new house where the system was previously installed. Or maybe they bought a used unit for good price not really knowing what they were getting. Whatever the case may be, an AC system that is not energy efficient can lead to higher energy bills and possibly more repairs and maintenance in the future as it demands more power in order to operate.

That is why it is important to make sure that your home has a fully energy efficient air conditioning system, so you can save money on your electric bill, and decrease the chances of needing multiple repairs. So how do you know if your home AC system is energy efficient?

Most units have a yellow Energy Guide on the side of them where you can find the SEER rating.

What Is A SEER Rating?

The United States Department of Energy lists different requirements for energy efficiency based on which region the air conditioner is in. An air conditioners energy efficiency is rated by what is known as SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The SEER rating is the maximum energy efficiency rating for a single AC unit, much like how a vehicle only gets X amount of gas per mile. Some vehicles are built to maximize miles per gallon while other vehicles are not. So we all know that having efficient gas milage is good with our vehicles, the same goes for SEER ratings for our air conditioners.

Having a high SEER rating means that the AC system uses less energy to maintain the desired comfortable temperature in a home, therefore decreasing the energy bill every month, where as a lower SEER rated system uses more energy to operate. SEER ratings can be from between 10 to 21, 21 being a very high and efficient rating. Most SEER rated air conditioning units in Florida and most of the Southeast average a 14 SEER rating. Most air conditioning systems installed before 2006 are 10 SEER or below.

Professional AC And Heating installs various SEER rated air conditioning units that prioritize energy efficiency. Homeowners in Florida usually have their AC on at most times of day to stay cool, so we specialize in energy efficient units so homeowners can save money on their energy bills and stay cool and comfortable all at the same time.
